Volvo Diesel Plug-in Hybrid at Geneva

Volvo’s new V60 Diesel Plug-in Hybrid debuted as a production concept car at the Geneva Motor Show this year. It combines three drive technologies – diesel, electric or hybrid drive.

Volvo is planning to launch a production diesel-hybrid model as early as next year and a production version of this V60 the year after.

With the V60 at the press of a button it can be an all-electric car using a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery with enough power for a range of 50 kilometres.

When the electric power runs out, it can be recharged from any 230 Volt wall socket. Depending on the current rating, the recharging time is between 3 and 7.5 hours.

The diesel and electricity consumption, battery state of charge and remaining range are displayed in the cockpit.

In turbo-diesel form the front wheels are driven by the 214 hp 2.4 litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine featuring the Bosch Common Rail System. While in the hybrid mode the interaction is between the diesel engine and the electric motor.

The maximum range for the V60 is said to be 1200 kilometres.
